Spectrum Health is hiring a full time Oracle and SQL Server DBA (2 Disciplines – 1 FTE) and I’m tossing this request out to you here. The formal job posting can be found on the Spectrum Health website, but keep in mind the posting was written by a series of managerial monkeys pounding away on random 1958 Royal typewriters – and Human Resources personnel. It’s is lacking the subtle nuances that really tell you what the job will be like. “Hey Tim! What things are those” you may ask? Well, for one, the division of labor for the average work week will typically be 70% Oracle and 30% SQL Server – except for when I’m on vacation or traipsing around the globe on a cruise ship for a SQL Cruise. Additionally, you’ll also need to relocate to Western Michigan because you will need to go into the office most (if not all) of the time. Granted, you’ll have the ability to work remote if situations arise that require you to be at home to take care of a sick child, get cable installed, or receive delivery of whatever may show up to your home wrapped in plain brown paper, but your primary place of employment will be in the office. You’ll be responsible for support of clinical, financial, and business systems that require 24×7 support and you will need to take your turn on rotation for on call support. Finally, you’ll need to be able to hit the ground running without the need for substantial technical training beyond becoming accustomed with our corporate practices and support techniques and tools.
The following are additional skills beyond those mentioned in the generic posting that I will be looking for when I interview for the position from the angle of Microsoft SQL Server:
- This is a Senior Position. Significant experience in supporting, troubleshooting, and performance tuning SQL Server 2000, 2005, 2008, and 2008R2 is a must.
- Experience with supporting and development in SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)
- Understanding of advanced performance tuning techniques such as wait stats, DMOs, DBCC, etc.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills are crucial.
- Positive attitude. ( I can’t stress this enough! )
- Understanding of standard backup and maintenance practices for SQL Server.
- Free-thinker interested in automating and standardizing a demanding and dynamic environment.
- Desire to embrace an environment of consistent learning.
- Familiarity with SQL Sentry Performance Advisor and Event Manager a plus.
