(in)Active August Post One

I know not of this #ActiveAugust thread going around on Twitter, but a few of the bloggers (Tom LaRock, K. Brian Kelley, Andy Leonard, Mike Walsh, Grant Fritchey, Chuck Boyce Jr., and Jorge Segarra) I follow and call my friends are getting all worked up and sweaty over this mandate to be more active this month.  Well, I thought I was doing my damned best to do that for the last 10 months, so what I’m going to do instead is to help them all along by highlighting all the non-active things I’ve done in the hopes to elevate their laudable achievements by comparison.

Firstly though I believe there is this weigh in/benchmark kind of thing going on so let me put down my Black and Tan, brush the potato chips off my lap and get up off the couch and weigh myself on the Wii Fit…

Okay, apparently I weigh 156 and am 5’7.5.  Note that when you are a 40 year old man you still include the 1/2″ when you are under 5’8″.  Also note that you should not strip down to your underwear and weigh yourself on a Wii Fit if your wife just invited in the neighbors for drinks.  You *wait* to do that until after they’ve had a few drinks and perhaps they’ll join in.

So, Day One was rough.  My inactivity level was low, though I did make up for the shameful acts of being active early in the day by my drive to over-indulge by day’s end:

Spinning class 8:00 – 9:00 followed by 30 minutes of weight training.  I was able to convince Amy to come along for her first ever exercise class.  She did admirably well.  I think I mentioned something about going to the farmer’s market after class to her and may not have spoke the phrase “exercise class” above a whisper.  She’s still not talking to me; nor walking without wimpering and swearing for that matter.

We did end up walking the market afterwards while still on the adrenaline high from class.  We then went on a marathon 4 hour session of house cleaning and lawn mowing before our guest arrived for the day.

So I apologize for the effort I put in.  I made up for it by nibbling on bacon, Chicago sweet italian sausage, cream cheese infused with red peppers and scallions while preparing for dinner.  Dinner included said items as well as grilled jalepeno peppers stuffed with feta and bacon, feta bruchetta and steak.  Dessert, courtesy of my lovely wife, consisted of a choice of peach cobbler or key lime pie.  Toss in a few black and tans and wine and I think I cancelled out that horrible exercise.

Day Two was much better.  Coffee and reading for a few hours followed my a marathon session of Halo 3 on the XBox.  I did take a shower, which involved leaving the couch and standing for 10 minutes.  I’ll have to try harder to do less tomorrow.
